By arrrgh , July 15, in Officially Grads. I’m about to start my 4th year of grad school and am hoping to finish within 2 years. Recently I’ve developed an interest in a 3rd year postdoc that is 5 years my senior. Is it appropriate for grad students to date post docs? Any guidelines that should be followed? The short answer is that there should be no problems and you should disclose the relationship whenever a conflict of interest could arise — for example, if the post-doc was also teaching a grad class that you were taking, or if you were assigned to be a TA for this post-doc’s course. I think this is all you NEED to do. Also there are “unwritten” rules and you should think about how people important to you will view this. For example, what do you think your supervisor will think?
Love in the Lab
Two things recently came across my twitter feed that relate to academics moving. At some point in an Ask Us Anything post, someone asked about things where our views have changed a lot over our careers. But here is my very belated response: as an undergrad and a grad student, I bought the idea that I should be willing to move anywhere if I wanted a career in academia. I want to go to grad school so I can keep doing research.
When I asked, the response was that it would help to broaden my intellectual horizons if I moved elsewhere. So, I applied to other places, and ended up moving to Michigan for grad school.

Physical contact is not a required element of such relationships. A Covered Relationship may exist on the basis of a single interaction. Sexual or romantic relationships may raise concerns of conflict of interest, abuse of authority, favoritism, and unfair treatment when both people are in the MIT work or academic environment, and one person holds a position of power or authority over the other. These relationships may also affect others in the work or academic environment, undermining the integrity of their supervision and evaluation as well.
These concerns exist even when the relationship is considered consensual by both individuals. In some instances, consent may not be as freely given as the more senior person in the relationship believes. Because of the possible adverse effects on the other party and on their fellow students, co-workers, colleagues, and others, the Institute prohibits all faculty, other academic instructional staff, other employees, and other non-student members of the MIT community paid or unpaid from having sexual or romantic relationships with certain MIT students and employees, whether or not the relationship is consensual.

Apart from mutual understanding and moral support, a scientist couple can collaborate and help each other scientifically.
But living a romance in the laboratory, as in any other workplace, is complicated. There are rules to follow—but romance rarely follows rules. Whether married or just dating, scientist couples need to be aware of several potential pitfalls, such as workplace gossip, conflicts of interest, and breaches of trust. Some laboratory couples may be inclined to keep their romance a secret, especially at first.
But whether your relationship is public knowledge in the lab or kept private, it’s important to remain discreet and professional. Occasional, subtle acknowledgement of your special status may be OK, but you need to keep it on low boil.
