Former Student, Fair Game?

By arrrgh , July 15, in Officially Grads. I’m about to start my 4th year of grad school and am hoping to finish within 2 years. Recently I’ve developed an interest in a 3rd year postdoc that is 5 years my senior. Is it appropriate for grad students to date post docs? Any guidelines that should be followed? The short answer is that there should be no problems and you should disclose the relationship whenever a conflict of interest could arise — for example, if the post-doc was also teaching a grad class that you were taking, or if you were assigned to be a TA for this post-doc’s course. I think this is all you NEED to do. Also there are “unwritten” rules and you should think about how people important to you will view this. For example, what do you think your supervisor will think?

Love in the Lab

Two things recently came across my twitter feed that relate to academics moving. At some point in an Ask Us Anything post, someone asked about things where our views have changed a lot over our careers. But here is my very belated response: as an undergrad and a grad student, I bought the idea that I should be willing to move anywhere if I wanted a career in academia. I want to go to grad school so I can keep doing research.

When I asked, the response was that it would help to broaden my intellectual horizons if I moved elsewhere. So, I applied to other places, and ended up moving to Michigan for grad school.

Sexual or romantic relationships may raise concerns of conflict of interest, abuse of authority, favoritism, and unfair treatment when both people are in the MIT work or academic environment, and one person holds a position of power or authority over the other.
